Summer Of The Beasts Recap: The Opera Cup Semi-Finals Are Set

MLW is back in NYC and things got off on a rocky foot because whoever was operating the Doomsday clock was disrupting the broadcast. However, once order was restored, the league moved forward with the continuation of The Opera Cup!

MATCH 1
Opera Cup Quarterfinals
Bad Dude Tito vs. Alex Kane

Both men showed up with suplexes for this fight as Tito unloaded on Kane using his power to keep the former World Champ out of sorts. Kane however didn’t relent and did catch Tito with his Fade To Black submission. Tito seemingly passed out, but it was on top of Kane and the ref counted to three!

WINNER and ADVANCING: Bad Dude Tito

MATCH 2
World Featherweight Championship
Hanako vs. Janai Kai (c)

Kai literally had a tall task ahead of her as she had to square up against the 5’11” Hanako. The Kick Demon had plenty of kicks to keep Hanako grounded, but the debuting star did make the most of her height. Kai had to switch her gameplan up after hitting a running boot in the corner and wrapped Hanako in the Death Clutch for the submission win!

WINNER and STILL MLW World Featherweight Champion: Janai Kai

MATCH 3
Opera Cup Quarterfinals
“Filthy” Tom Lawlor (with MSL) vs. TJP

TJP makes his MLW return after two years and Lawlor is aiming to obtain his second Opera Cup. TJP became an alternate for the tournament after Davey Boy Smith Jr. cited an injury and was unable to compete. TJP was more than a fair substitute and despite interference from MSL, he hit his Mamba Splash and got the 1-2-3!

WINNER and ADVANCING: TJP

MATCH 4
Matthew Justice vs. Matt Riddle

These are clashes of hard-hitting styles in very different ways, but the two fist-bumped as a form of respect. Despite not having Fonzie in his corner, Justice brought his extreme ways to Riddle. Tables were used, but Riddle utilized his striking and strength. It ultimately was a Brostone onto a steel chair that kept Justice down for the pinfall victory.

WINNER: Matt Riddle

MATCH 5

Brett Ryan Gosselin (with Bobby Fish) vs. Paul London

Paul London makes his very long-awaited return after being 20 years away from an MLW ring, but he’s going up against the young and cocky BRG. London was able to neutralize Bobby Fish and managed to catch BRG with a double stomp to the back and gets the 1-2-3!

WINNER: Paul London

London gets quickly attacked by Fish and BRG as they aim to choke and stomp him out. Suddenly, out comes Brock and CW Anderson and New York is raucous for the duo to make the save. However, they turn on London and it’s a four-on-one beatdown!

When the four finish their dissection, they stand tall at the top of the entryway. The Andersons aren’t done, however.

MATCH 6
Jay Lyon & Love, Doug vs. The Andersons

There are many shades of the Andersons of old in this match as CW and Brock are methodical in their assault to Doug & Lyon. Lyon was greatly isolated in the last half of this match as Brock catapulted him into a superkick. He was down for the three count.

WINNERS: The Andersons

MATCH 7
Opera Cup Quarterfinals
AKIRA vs. KENTA

AKIRA displayed that he was fearless in going up against KENTA, but the latter was heavy on the offense. KENTA took time to mock AKIRA with some paint brush boots, but AKIRA got some retribution by hitting a GTS on the man himself! KENTA fought on and then hit his GTS to pick up the 1-2-3 and advancing!

WINNER AND ADVANCING: KENTA

MATCH 8
Little Guido vs. LSG vs. Nolo Kitano vs. Jimmy Lloyd

It was Guido who displayed a veteran presence in the ring as he had three of the competitors well scouted, clearing house, but the lights went dark and out came Donovan Dijak with MSL. Dijak laid waste to everyone to make his presence known and then made that even more clear on the microphone.

NO CONTEST

MATCH 9
MLW World Tag Team Championship
CONTRA Unit (Minoru Suzuki & Ikuro Kwon) vs. COZYMAX (c)

As expected this match had quite a bit of chaos as a brawl began big time between the four fighters. KOJIMA clearly showed why he is the World Champion as The Bread Winner took a lot of damage but dolled it out as well, unleashing his rapid machine gun chops.

Kwon kicked KOJIMA out of the equation and then misted Okumura in the eyes which set him up for a Suzuki Gotch piledriver for the 1-2-3 and we have new champions!

WINNER and NEW MLW World Tag Team Champions: CONTRA Unit

MAIN EVENT

Atlantis Jr. vs. Mistico

Mistico’s Middleweight Championship wasn’t on the line, but the stakes felt high in this fight and both fighters shown every bit of it. Atlantis Jr. really displayed a strong set of offense in this fight and even prevented Miscto from hitting his La Mistica finisher on him. But after a superplex to Atlantis and a twisting Senton bomb, Mistico covered and got the victory!

WINNER and ADVANCING; Mistico

The semi-finals are NOW set for Atlanta. It will be TJP taking on KENTA while Bad Dude Tito will battle Mistico!
