There are statement wins in professional wrestling… and then there are statement wins. On this past week’s episode one of Mexico’s top ranked luchadores was rocked in stunning fashion.
Exploiting a hole in Rey Fenix’s mat game, Air Wolf pinned one-half of the former World Tag Team Champions on MLW FUSION (watch).
With the capacity crowd in New York witnessing the arrival of a new player in the sport, Rey Fenix seemed at a loss for answers seconds after the 3 count was called by the referee.
Scouts in the office of wrestling operations have been high on the 19-year old masked Minnesotan but oddsmakers certainly weren’t eying an Air Wolf victory… yet just like in any other combat sport, you’re only a second away from defeat.
“The crazy thing about sports, especially professional wrestling, is that just when you think you’ve got it locked down, the future comes and reminds you of what’s up,” said MLW CEO Court Bauer who watched this bout live at the Melrose Ballroom.
While Fenix was the favorite going into the bout, Air Wolf has shown a lot of promise since debuting in MLW in March.
Trained by Ken Anderson, Molly Holy along with Shawn and Ariya Daivari, Air Wolf not only can fly but has a strong mat game having competed on the mats in greco-roman wrestling prior to turning pro.
What’s next for Air Wolf? Continuing to stack victories as he puts together a resume for a future title shot in the middleweight division. As for Fenix, the elite luchador now must reexamine his holes and chart his next match carefully.
Could we see a rematch in MLW? Air Wolf has confirmed he’d be honored to compete against Fenix again.
Fenix, on the hand, isn’t saying. The luchador declined to comment on a rematch.
